Pipe bomb safely detonated in Fort Washington

FORT WASHINGTON (WUSA9) -- Prince George's County bomb squad units safely detonated a pipe bomb Friday afternoon in Fort Washington.

According to a county fire spokesperson, a resident on Steuben Avenue called police at around 9:00 a.m. to report a suspicious package. A bomb squad determined it was a pipe bomb and robots blew it up at around 1 p.m.

A secondary search found more suspicious items nearby the original device, including an item that looked like a Molotov cocktail. Investigators are still on scene collecting evidence.

About two dozen homes were evacuated in the area as a precaution while the suspicious package was investigated. Everyone has been allowed back in their homes.
